PORTO

PORTO

Where the Douro Meets the Atlantic

Porto has never needed to compete for attention.

Built along the steep banks of the Douro, the city reveals itself through tiled façades, monumental bridges, historic cafés and narrow streets that eventually seem to lead back towards the river.

But Porto's character extends far beyond Ribeira.

Follow the Douro towards Foz and the landscape changes completely. The river meets the Atlantic, elegant villas replace the medieval streets and afternoons are spent between oceanfront restaurants, beach terraces and long walks beside the water.

Across the river, Vila Nova de Gaia tells another chapter of the city's story through centuries-old Port wine cellars, contemporary hotels and some of Porto's finest views.

Come for a weekend and Porto will surprise you.

Stay a little longer and you begin to understand why those who know the city rarely experience it only once.

This is Levart's guide to experiencing the very best of Porto.

EXPERIENCE

Watch Porto Wake Up from São Bento

Some railway stations simply take you somewhere.

São Bento makes you stop before the journey has even begun.

Step inside the entrance hall and look up at the thousands of blue-and-white azulejos covering its walls, depicting chapters of Portuguese history in one of Porto's most extraordinary interiors.

Go early.

Before the station fills, there is something almost cinematic about standing beneath its tiled walls while the city begins another morning outside.

Taste Porto at Mercado do Bolhão

Porto should never be experienced only through fine dining.

Spend lunchtime inside Mercado do Bolhão, wandering between traditional food stalls, local producers and counters celebrating the flavours of northern Portugal.

Order something simple.

Try Portuguese cheese, charcuterie, seafood and a glass of wine.

Sometimes the best way to understand a city is through its market.

Discover Porto's Most Famous Bookshop

Few bookstores have become destinations in their own right.

Livraria Lello is one of them.

Its neo-Gothic interior, carved wooden staircase and stained-glass ceiling have made it one of Porto's most recognisable landmarks.

It is enormously popular, so reserve ahead and arrive as early as possible.

The architecture deserves to be seen before the crowds take over.

Taste Port Where It Belongs

Cross the Douro into Vila Nova de Gaia and dedicate part of an afternoon to the wine that helped define Porto internationally.

For Levart, a tasting at Niepoort is the kind of experience worth seeking out.

Don't treat Port as something to taste quickly before moving on.

Understand the vintages, the ageing process and the extraordinary history behind the houses lining the river.

Walk Through the Palácio de Cristal Gardens

When Porto becomes busy, disappear into the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal.

Palm trees, landscaped gardens and unexpected viewpoints over the Douro make this one of the city's most beautiful places for an afternoon walk.

There is no itinerary required here.

Simply wander.

See Porto from the Water

The Douro is not merely something to admire from the riverbank.

Get onto it.

A private or small-group boat journey beneath Porto's bridges gives you an entirely different perspective of the city, from Ribeira's colourful façades to the Port houses of Gaia.

Late afternoon is particularly beautiful.

Sunset at Jardim do Morro

There are more polished rooftops in Porto.

There are more exclusive terraces.

But few views capture the city quite like Jardim do Morro.

Arrive before sunset, find a place overlooking the Douro and watch the final light fall across Ribeira and the Dom Luís I Bridge.

Simple.

Unpretentious.

Top tier.

EXPLORE

Ribeira

Porto's historic heart belongs beside the Douro.

Walk through Ribeira without following a precise route. Discover colourful façades, narrow staircases and tiny streets before crossing the Dom Luís I Bridge towards Vila Nova de Gaia.

The beauty is in getting slightly lost.

Baixa

This is where some of Porto's grandest architecture comes together.

São Bento, Avenida dos Aliados, Clérigos and Livraria Lello can all form part of the same morning, interrupted only by coffee and something sweet.

Foz do Douro

Then Porto changes.

At Foz, the Douro finally meets the Atlantic.

The atmosphere becomes residential and distinctly coastal, with oceanfront promenades, beaches, terraces and some of the city's most elegant hotels.

Spend an afternoon here even if you're staying in the historic centre.

Better still, stay for a night.

Vila Nova de Gaia

Crossing the river isn't simply about visiting the Port cellars.

Gaia now offers destination hotels, restaurants, rooftop terraces and some of the best panoramas of Porto.

The view back towards Ribeira is particularly beautiful as evening begins.

EAT & DRINK

Hikari

One of the addresses Levart would put high on the Porto list.

Refined, contemporary and worth making part of an evening rather than treating it as simply another reservation.

Yakuza by Olivier

For contemporary Japanese dining, Yakuza by Olivier brings a more cosmopolitan energy to Porto.

Beautiful interiors, polished presentation and an atmosphere made for a longer evening.YAKUZA - Restaurantes Olivier

Zephyr Playa

Porto isn't only about tiled buildings and Port wine.

Zephyr Playa brings you towards the coast, where the Atlantic becomes part of the experience.

Come for the setting as much as the food.ZEPHYR PLAYA, Vila Nova de Gaia - Restaurant Avis, Numéro de Téléphone ...

Al Mare – Foz

Another reason to spend time around Foz.

Seafood, ocean air and a location that reminds you that Porto is as connected to the Atlantic as it is to the Douro.

Le Palais

Add this to the list for a more elegant Porto dining experience.

The kind of address that works particularly well when you want an evening to feel like an occasion.

Le Palais - Restaurante | Porto

Memória

A restaurant worth considering when you want something more intimate and characterful within the Porto itinerary.

Casa de Chá da Boa Nova

This is not simply lunch.

Designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza and dramatically positioned between rocks and the Atlantic at Leça da Palmeira, Casa de Chá da Boa Nova turns the landscape into part of the dining room.

Come during daylight.

You want to see the ocean.

Taberna Londrina

There is one dish you cannot leave Porto without trying.

Francesinha.

Bread, meat, melted cheese and an unmistakable rich sauce create one of Portugal's most unapologetically indulgent dishes.

There are endless debates about where to eat the best one.

For the Levart itinerary, Taberna Londrina is an easy place to begin.

Do not schedule a tasting menu afterwards.

Trust us.

Mercado do Bolhão

Not every meal needs white tablecloths.

Come hungry and allow lunch to happen naturally between the stalls.

Pastel de Nata

Yes, Lisbon gets most of the attention.

We don't care.

Eat one in Porto anyway.

Preferably warm.

Preferably with coffee.

Preferably more than once.

COFFEE & APERITIVO

Majestic Café

A quick stop is enough.

But skipping it would be a mistake.

Behind its Belle Époque façade lies one of Porto's most famous historic cafés, filled with mirrors, carved wood and the atmosphere of another era.

Order a coffee, admire the room and continue exploring.

30 AMAZING Things to Do in Porto, Portugal

Guindalense Futebol Clube

This is exactly the sort of address we love putting into a Levart guide.

Not because it is the city's most luxurious bar.

Because the view is brilliant.

Grab a drink, look across the Douro and experience Porto without unnecessary ceremony.

LIFT Rooftop

Save this one for sunset drinks.

Porto looks particularly good from above when the rooftops begin catching the final light of the day.

WOW

World of Wine has transformed part of Vila Nova de Gaia into a cultural and gastronomic district overlooking Porto.

Even if you don't spend an entire day here, it is worth considering for a drink, dinner or an evening overlooking the river.Places - WOW Porto - The World of Wine

Ponte Sky Bar

Another strong option when the brief is simple:

A drink.

A view.

STAY

The Rebello

One of our favourite contemporary bases on the Gaia side of the Douro.

The design feels considered without becoming excessive, while the position provides beautiful views back towards Porto.

Even if you don't sleep here, come for a sunset drink.

Watching Porto illuminate across the river is reason enough. How a Porto hotel speaks to the city's history – and its future | Mix ...

The Yeatman

A Porto classic.

Perched above Vila Nova de Gaia, The Yeatman combines serious wine credentials with some of the city's most recognisable views.

Choose it if wine, gastronomy and waking up overlooking Porto are central to the trip.

Vila Foz Hotel & Spa

For something completely different, leave the historic centre behind.

Vila Foz occupies an elegant manor beside the Atlantic and brings a quieter, coastal character to the Porto experience.

This is where we'd stay when the city has been explored and the ocean starts calling.

SHOP

Porto rewards people who look beyond international luxury labels.

Discover:

• Rua das Flores

• Rua de Miguel Bombarda

• Portuguese ceramics

• Independent fashion and design boutiques

• Traditional food shops around Bolhão

• Local wine merchants

And leave room in the suitcase.

Port wine counts as a souvenir.

LEVART TIPS

Walk Porto whenever possible.

Yes, the hills will remind you they're there.

Wear good shoes.

Visit São Bento early.

Reserve Livraria Lello in advance rather than losing part of the day waiting.

Spend at least one afternoon in Foz.

Don't leave without eating a francesinha.

Do your Port tasting before dinner, not after.

Cross the river more than once.

Porto and Gaia belong to the same journey.

And if you have two extra days, don't simply add more time in the city.

Follow the river east.

Go to the Douro Valley.

A PERFECT FIVE-DAY ESCAPE

Day 1 | Porto

Begin at São Bento before walking through the historic centre towards Ribeira.

Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge, explore Gaia and finish the first evening watching sunset from Jardim do Morro.

Day 2 | Porto

Start around Bolhão and enjoy an informal lunch at the market.

Continue towards Livraria Lello, Clérigos and the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal.

In the afternoon, stop at Majestic Café before an evening reservation at Hikari or Yakuza by Olivier.

Day 3 | Gaia & The Douro

Spend the morning discovering Vila Nova de Gaia and experience a Port tasting at Niepoort.

Continue with a boat journey along the Douro before returning for sunset drinks at The Rebello, WOW or Ponte Sky Bar.

Finish with dinner overlooking the city.

Day 4 | Foz & The Atlantic

Leave the centre behind and follow the river towards Foz.

Walk beside the Atlantic, spend time around the beach and enjoy lunch at Al Mare or continue towards Leça da Palmeira for the architectural experience of Casa de Chá da Boa Nova.

Check into Vila Foz Hotel & Spa if you want to make the coastal chapter last a little longer.

Day 5 | Porto Without a Plan

Keep the final day deliberately open.

Return to the neighbourhood you liked most.

Eat the francesinha you somehow haven't managed yet.

Have a pastel de nata with coffee.

Stop for a drink at Guindalense Futebol Clube or another terrace overlooking the Douro.

Then watch Porto disappear into evening one final time.

ADD TWO DAYS | THE DOURO VALLEY

If your schedule allows it, don't fly home yet.

Rent a car or arrange a driver and follow the Douro east into one of Europe's most extraordinary wine landscapes.

Terraced vineyards rise dramatically from the river, historic quintas disappear into the hills and the city feels increasingly distant with every kilometre.

Spend two nights.

Visit wineries.

Take a boat onto the river.

Have lunch overlooking the vineyards.

And understand where the story you began tasting in Porto actually starts.

THE LEVART PERSPECTIVE

Porto's beauty lies in its contrasts.

The city can feel grand and imperfect at exactly the same time.

Centuries-old tiles sit beside contemporary architecture.

Michelin-level dining exists alongside a francesinha covered in melted cheese.

Port wine cellars face modern rooftop hotels across the same river.

And only a few kilometres from the historic centre, the Douro disappears into the Atlantic.

Don't come looking for perfection.

Come looking for character.

Cross the bridge.

Taste the wine.

Walk the hills.

Follow the river until you reach the ocean.

Because Porto doesn't need to impress you immediately.

Give it a few days.

It has a habit of staying with you.
